VLC Media Player est un lecteur multimédia extrêmement léger. La consommation en ressources du programme a été réduite au minimum pour fonctionner parfaitement en arrière plan ou sur des systèmes à la puissance modeste. C'est une alternative convainquante face à Windows Media Player et aux nombreux autres programmes utilisant les fondations du lecteur de Microsoft. L'une des particularités de ce lecteur est qu'il ne nécessite pas l'installation de codecs supplémentaires pour fonctionner correctement. Ce principe est sans aucun doute un avantage intéressant puisqu'il n'est plus nécessaire d'installer de nombreux codecs regroupés dans des packs pour lire une vidéo dont le format de compression est inconnu pour un lecteur traditionnel ! VLC Media Player est toutefois en mesure de lire les formats audio et vidéo les plus répandus de façon totalement autonome avec un rendu bien meilleur grâce à des post-traitements sur l'image et le son d'une qualité supérieure. VLC Media Player est ainsi capable de lire, entre autres, les fichiers Mpeg-1, Mpeg-2, Mpeg-4, DivX, AAC, MP3, OGG, AVI, WMV, MOV etc. Mais les fonctions du lecteur ne se limitent pas à la simple lecture de fichiers multimédias, puisque VLC peut être utilisé pour lire des DVD Vidéo, les VCD, SVCD et certains protocoles de streaming. L'application peut également être configurée en tant que serveur unicast ou multicast sur des réseaux IPv4 ou IPv6, à la bande passante conséquente.
